 Two years after Duke University made Apple iPods essential gear by giving them to all incoming freshmen, the university is taking a new tack.
This year, Duke issued iPods only to students whose instructors submitted plans showing how they would use them in their courses. Next year, they'll be available to students in the same way, but on loan or to keep if students buy them for a subsidized price of $99, which is less than half their cost, officials say.
The iPod program drew widespread attention in 2004, and Duke's experiment of incorporating the devices in teaching has been successful, administrators say.
